CSMT bridge collapse: Auditor arrested in Maharashtra

Five days after a foot overbridge collapsed near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Mumbai police have arrested the structure's auditor - Neeraj Desai who reportedly gave clearance without proper structural audit.

Mumbai: Days after the CSMT bridge collapse, which claimed the lives of six people and injured 36, the Mumbai Police have arrested Neeraj Desai, who had reportedly cleared the bridge without a proper structural audit.

"Initially when we visited the spot. An offence of IPC under Sections 304 A, 337 and 338 was registered by seeing the incident. After an investigation, it came out that the structural audit and the negligence on the part of various officials," said DCP Abhishek Trimukhe.

"These are the persons, who are experts in their field and have knowledge that such a negligent act can cause damage to the lives of the people. So, we have applied Section 304 Part 2 instead of 304 A, which means culpable homicide not amounting to murder," said Trimukhe, while talking to media persons on Monday.

"Based on facts, we have taken into custody Neeraj Desai, owner of Desai firm, who was structural auditor of this bridge. We are investigating his role further. We are conducting a professional and independent investigation, and we ensure citizens that a proper charge-sheet will be filed before Court of Law," he said.

Mumbai, Mar 18 (ANI): Maharashtra Police on Monday arrested the auditor who was responsible for giving a structural go-ahead to the collapsed foot-over bridge at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station in Mumbai, where six people had died. Neeraj Desai's firm had reportedly carried out the structural audit of the bridge and declared it safe for use despite some corrosion in the structure.
