MHA team meets WB Governor over post-poll violence

The four-member team of the Union Home Ministry, formed to investigate the causes of post-election violence in West Bengal, has met the state Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Kolkata: The four-member team of the Union Home Ministry, formed to investigate the causes of post-election violence in West Bengal, met the state Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar today. The team, headed by an Additional Secretary of the Home Ministry, reached Kolkata on Thursday.

According to officials, the team members met the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Director General of Police on Thursday at the secretariat before meeting the governor. The team also visited the South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts and met with the victims' families and local people.

Earlier, the Union Home Ministry had sought a report from the West Bengal Governor on the law and order situation in the state given the incidents of post-election violence.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that so far 16 people have lost their lives in various parts of the state in the post-election violence. The BJP alleges that Trinamool Congress-backed 'goons' have killed many BJP workers, attacked its female members, vandalised homes and looted shops.

However, Mamata Banerjee has dismissed these allegations and claimed that BJP candidates have won the elections in the areas where violence has taken place.
