New Delhi: Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal may be included in the Union Cabinet. According to sources, Sonowal had reached Delhi on Friday on the instructions of the BJP high command. However, the BJP leader had termed it as just a courtesy call. Speculation is that Sonowal, who belongs to Assam's indigenous Sonowal-Kachari tribe, had been summoned by the party leadership for consultations ahead of a reshuffle of the PM Modi cabinet. It is known that the BJP won the recently concluded Assam assembly elections, and the party's central leadership had decided to make Himanta Biswa Sarma the chief minister, instead of Sonowal who had served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to May 2021.

Sonowal had successfully run the government in Assam for five years and then played a key role in the party's return to power, therefore, there is a greater possibility that he may be included in the Union Council of Ministers. Recently, Himanta Biswa Sarma prior to being handed the state's top post claimed BJP president JP Nadda of having said that Sonowal would be handed a new responsibility.

"My valued colleague @sarbanandsonwal Ji was at the helm of a pro-people and pro-development administration over the last five years. His contribution towards Assam's progress and strengthening the party in the state is immense," PM Modi had tweeted on the day Sarma was sworn in as the chief minister of Assam.
