Davangere (Karnataka): A case of Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy of Childhood (ANEC) has been reported from Karnataka's Davanagere district, which is the first in the state and second in the country. This viral disease has been identified in a 13-yr old patient by doctors of SS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre. According to reports, the boy who hails from Huvina Hadagali taluk in Vijayanagar district is undergoing treatment for the rare post-Covid complication at the hospital. He was admitted to the hospital eight days ago and was put on a ventilator for around three days, however as his condition improved he is now been taken off life support.

Doctors say that Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy of Childhood is similar to Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C), wherein the patient's brain becomes inactive and water builds up inside the lungs and liver, thereby causing organ failure. American Journal of Neuroradiology has termed ANEC as a rapidly progressive encephalopathy that affects infants and children, reported initially by Mizuguchi in 1995, with most cases having been identified from Southeast Asia. The prognosis of the disease is generally poor, with a high rate of mortality and severe neurologic sequelae. The term 'sequelae' is broadly defined as a condition resultant from a previous disease.
