Chennai (Tamil Nadu): Former CBI officer K Ragothaman, who was the Chief Investigating Officer in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, died in Chennai on Wednesday, police sources said.
The 76-year-old veteran was admitted to a hospital last week for Covid-19 treatment and breathed his last this morning, hospital sources said.

Ragothaman was the CIO in the CBI's Special Investigation Team (SIT) that probed the killing of Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991, at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai by a female suicide bomber at an election rally.
He had penned a few books, including one on the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.

Based on his experience as the Chief Investigating Officer, who had to register cases, in the CBI, he penned a book 'Rajiv Kolai Vazhakku' in Tamil, and the same was published as 'Conspiracy to Kill Rajiv Gandhi: From CBI Files' in English.
He had worked in various parts of India and has handled important and significant cases for the CBI which include anti-corruption, economic crimes, banking and the security fraud cell.

He holds a Master's degree in Economics from Annamalai University. While studying at Annamalai University, he worked as an editor for the weekly magazine Annamalai News. He joined the CBI as a sub-inspector and underwent training for a year at the National Police Academy.
