CBI arrests IPS officer SMH Mirza in Narada sting case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested Senior IPS officer SMH Mirza in Kolkata in connection with its probe into the Narada tapes case.

Kolkata: The CBI has arrested senior India Police Service officer SMH Mirza on Thursday in connection with Narada sting tape case, officials said.

Mirza was the Superintendent of Police of Burdwan district in West Bengal when the sting operation was conducted by Mathew Samuels of the Narada News portal.

He is allegedly seen on camera accepting cash from a purported businessman on behalf of politicians.

CBI sleuths will produce Mirza in special CBI court today. This is the first arrest in Narada scam case.

The investigation agency had also conducted voice sample tests of TMC MP Saugata Roy and former minister Madan Mitra in connection with the Narada sting operation case earlier.

Kolkata : CBI nabbed Former SP of Burdwan IPS SMH Mirza in connection with Narad scam. Senior IPS officer SMH Mirza, one of the accused in the Narada muddle, was interrogated thrice at the CBI’s Nizam Palace earlier this year. Mirza came under the scanner after a footage which was purportedly recorded by the  released. In the Narada tapes, the police officer was seen accepting cash from Narada News boss Mathew Samuel at the behest of some political leaders. According to central agency sources, Samuel had allegedly met SMH Mirza first at a star hotel near Camac Street, followed by another meeting at a mall near the airport. In his statement before the central agencies, Samuel claimed that he had paid Rs 5 lakh to SMH Mirza. Mirza was the superintendent of police of the undivided Burdwan district when the sting operation was conducted by Samuels. The video footage of the sting operation, conducted in 2014, were uploaded on the news portal before the West Bengal assembly elections in 2016 and created a furore in the state's politics.
