Amritsar: People of Amritsar claimed to have heard "loud blasts" in the wee hours of Thursday, after which social media was abuzz with speculation of an army-related intervention.
Few people took to social media to express about the two "very loud sounds", which some said, sounded similar to bomb blasts.
However, the police said that "everything was okay" in the city and urged the people not to believe in "rumours" on social media.
Jagjit Singh Walia, ADCP Amritsar, told to media: "I appeal to the people, do not believe in rumours on social media. Everything is okay. As per our information, nothing has happened. "
On Twitter, people claimed "heightened air activity" in the city.
Soon the hashtag Amritsar surfaced with the conversation perking up about "sonic booms", "low flying jets" or just "loud sounds across the sky".
Most people reported loud sounds around 1 am on Friday.

ADCP Amritsar said it was 'merely chatter' on social media and added: "We will investigate the matter. If there is something, we will let you know."
A couple of blast sounds and the whole city is awake & apprehensive. Enough to make us realize we wouldn’t want a war and destroy the peace in the border cities. #Amritsar
