COVID-19 cases in Gujarat increasing by leaps and bounds

The COVID-19 pandemic is witnessing a spike in Gujarat. A large section of people from all major cities including Ahmedabad is becoming victims of the pandemic. With the spread of the pandemic, the government too has sprung into action. Despite the imposition of night curfew and strict enforcement of COVID-19 prevention guidelines, the number of coronavirus positive cases is increasing rapidly in Ahmedabad and in other districts of the state. Though the administration claims to be ever vigilant, there is a constant increase in the number of Covid positive cases. The government claims that there are enough beds in hospitals of major cities to treat coronavirus patients.

Ahmedabad (Gujarat): There were 646 coronavirus positive cases on Saturday and the number increased to 664 cases on Sunday. Thus the number of coronavirus positive cases in Ahmedabad alone has reached 70,948. Till now, the deadly pandemic has claimed the lives of 2,314 city dwellers. However, as a matter of relief, a total of 600 patients managed to defeat COVID-19 on Sunday. So far, a total of 66,705 coronavirus positive cases in the city have recovered and discharged from hospitals.

There is panic among the residents of Ahmedabad due to the rapid spread of the pandemic. Also, coronavirus-afflicted patients in hospitals is increasing by the day. As many as 75 per cent of hospital beds are occupied by corona patients. In view of the spread of the pandemic, additional 200 beds have been set aside for the treatment of corona patients on the campus of Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute Civil Hospital. In all 2,785 corona patients are being treated in the city’s 65 private hospitals while there are 970 vacant beds reserved for the corona patients. As many as 219 patients are on the ventilator. There are 58 beds vacant that have the facility of a ventilator. As many as 430 patients are receiving treatment in ICUs. The administration is keeping a close watch in view of the increasing number of corona cases in the civil hospital. In the civil hospital, 75 per cent of the patients are being put on oxygen. The company which supplies oxygen to the hospital has increased the frequency of its oxygen supply from every four to five days to daily.

The government holds a high-level meeting

A high-level meeting of officials was held to review the situation arising out of the sudden spike in corona cases. The meeting was attended by members of the core committee, secretary, principal secretary and senior doctors. An alternative arrangement is being made in the civil hospital to meet the shortage of beds for the treatment of corona patients. In the 1,200-bed COVID, as many as 920 beds were reserved for corona patients. Now 1,100 beds have been reserved for corona patients. In the kidney hospital, 160 beds and in the cancer hospital 30 more beds have been acquired for the treatment of corona cases. As many as 545 health workers, including doctors and nurses, too have been infected by the Coronavirus so far. Of the 12 infected doctors, seven are kept in home isolation while five have been admitted to the hospital.

Surat: 5,500 beds in government and private hospitals

There has been a constant increase in the number of phone calls made to 108 and 104 emergency numbers after March 12. Most of the infected people are receiving treatment in home isolation. In the Surat civil hospital, 760 of the 1,000 beds are vacant while in SMIMER hospital 518 of the total 821 beds are vacant. In private hospitals, 908 beds of the total 2,113 beds reserved for corona patients are vacant. At present, there are 5,500 beds are available in government and private hospitals. The administration is thinking of starting a community care centre if the need arises. Private hospitals are also learned to have entered into a contract with ten hotels.

Bhavnagar: 7,170 coronavirus positive cases, 6,605 discharged, 72 deceased. An adequate number of beds and ventilators available.

In Bhavnagar city, there were 7,170 coronavirus positive cases reported as of April 4 of which 6,605 recovered and 72 patients died. There are 275 beds for the treatment of corona patients in the city’s Sir T hospital where at present 120 infected patients and 66 suspected cases are receiving treatment. Thus, there are still 90 beds vacant. There is an adequate number of ventilators. In the Sir T Hospital of Bhavnagar, there are 275 beds reserved for corona patients. There are two buildings of the trauma centre and skin ward where there were 120 corona positive patients and 66 suspected corona cases were receiving treatment as of April 5 at 8 am. Besides, as many as 11 private hospitals in the city have 196 beds where corona cases can be treated. According to hospital administrator Hardik Gathani, there is an adequate number of ventilators available.

Rajkot: 1,325 patients under treatment

The number of corona positive cases has been increasing in Rajkot city on a daily basis. The total number of corona positive cases in the city has crossed 20,000. There are 1,325 corona patients receiving treatment at different hospitals in the city. There are in all 933 beds reserved for corona patients in the city’s hospitals. The Rajkot civil hospital has a total of 590 beds and at present 476 patients are receiving treatment. Of the total 933 beds in Rajkot, 604 patients are admitted for treatment while 329 beds are still vacant. Rajkot collector Remya Mohan told ETV Bharat that arrangements for additional 500 beds would be made if the need arises.

Jamnagar: 1,227 beds in COVID hospital

There are 1,227 beds in the well-equipped Guru Govind Singh hospital of the city with adequate beds, oxygen and ventilators for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. At present 400 corona patients are being treated in the hospital, 100 have been put on oxygen while the condition of 300 of them is normal. Nodal officer of the COVID hospital SS Chatterjee told ETV Bharat that the hospital is well prepared to meet the challenge of increasing COVID cases. Apart from this, the patients are also being provided food on time so that their immunity increases. Their diet includes dry fruit, pulses and an Ayurvedic hot drink.
