Hyderabad: On Saturday morning, Non-Executive Chairman of ITC Yogesh Chander Deveshwar passed away in Gurugram in a private hospital. Though he was better known to the world for transforming the ITC from a tobacco-based company to India’s one of the largest fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) company, there are many little known things about him only a few are aware of.
Here are the details:
- He was born on 4th February in Lahore of present Pakistan in 1947
- He was an alumnus of IIT Delhi and the Harward Business School
- He joined ITC in 1968 and was appointed as a director on the Board of the company in 1984
- He became the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ITC in 1996 and served for more than 20 years
- He stepped down from the executive position in 2017 and became the company’s Non-Executive Chairman
- He was also the Chairman of the Society and Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta
- He received Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award in 2011
- He was listed as the best Performing CEO in India by Harvard Business Review
- He led Air India as the Chairman and Managing Director between 1991 and 1994
- In 2012, the Union Government nominated him as a Director on the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
