New Delhi: Amid the coronavirus pandemic, India's largest airline IndiGo on Monday announced that it will lay off 10% of its workforce.
The aviation sector has been hit hard by COVID-19 with airlines cancelling international flights and announcing pay cuts for employees.
"After carefully assessing and reviewing all possible scenarios it is clear that we will need to bid a painful adieu to 10 per cent of our workforce," airline CEO Ronojoy Dutta said.
"This is indeed a very unfortunate turn of events from the optimistic growth trajectory we had carved out ourselves just 6 months ago; but this pandemic has forced us to reevaluate our best laid plans," he added.

IndiGo CEO further stated that it was critical for them to minimise the impact of the pandemic on their employees and in fact IndiGo was one of the few airlines globally which traded full salaries for the month of March and April 2020, despite the destruction in business.
"Subsequently, we did have to undertake number of measures such as pay cuts, leave without pay and various other costs; but unfortunately these cost savings are clearly not enough to offset the decline in revenues," added Ronojoy Dutta.
To help the impacted employees, the airline said that it has created 6E Care package in which they will be paid notice pay in lieu of serving notice applicable to them, severance pay, at least 3-months gross salary, etc.
The airline said that the impacted employees who wants to travel back to their hometown or base location, will be given a one-way confirmed air ticket.
