August Report: Maruti, MG sales up; Mahindra, Hyundai in negative

Major automobile companies released their sales report on Tuesday. Maruti Suzuki and MG Motor have reported positive growth in sales, whereas Mahindra, Hyundai and Toyota Kirloskar have reported negative growth.

New Delhi: The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Tuesday reported 17.1 per cent increase in sales at 1,24,624 units in August.

The company had sold 1,06,413 units in August last year, MSI said in a statement.

Domestic sales increased by 20.2 per cent to 1,16,704 units last month, as against 97,061 units in August 2019, it added.

Sales of mini cars comprising Alto and WagonR stood at 19,709 units as compared to 10,123 units in the same month last year, up 94.7 per cent.

Sales of compact segment, including models such as Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno and Dzire rose 14.2 per cent to 61,956 units as against 54,274 cars in August last year.

Mid-sized sedan Ciaz sold 1,223 units as compared to 1,596 units earlier, down 23.4 per cent.

Sales of utility vehicles, including Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and Ertiga, increased 13.5 per cent to 21,030 units as compared to 18,522 units in the year-ago month, MSI said.

Exports in August were up down 15.3 per cent at 7,920 units as against 9,352 units in the corresponding month last year, the company said.

MG Motor India post 41.2% increase in retail sales

MG Motor India reported a 41.2 per cent increase in its retail sales at 2,851 units in August.

The company had sold 2,018 units in the same month last year, MG Motor India said in a statement.

Toyota Kirloskar sales dip 48%

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said its sales declined by 48.08 per cent to 5,555 units in August.

The company had sold 10,701 units in the domestic market in August 2019.

Mahindra August sales dip 16% to 30,426 units

Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) reported a 16 per cent decline in total sales at 30,426 units in August.

The company had sold 36,085 units in the same month last year, M&M said in a statement.

In the domestic market, sales were down 13 per cent to 29,257 units last month, compared to 33,564 units in August 2019.

Exports dropped by 54 per cent to 1,169 units, as against 2,521 units in the year-ago month.

In the passenger vehicles segment -- which includes utility vehicles (UVs), cars and vans -- it sold 13,651 vehicles in August this year, against 13,507 vehicles in the same month last year, up 1 per cent.

In the commercial vehicles segment, the company sold 15,299 units, as against 14,684 units earlier, a rise of 4 per cent.

M&M posts 65% jump in tractor sales in August

Mahindra & Mahindra reported 65 per cent jump in total tractor sales at 24,458 units in August.

The company had sold 14,817 tractors in the same month last year, M&M said in a statement.

Domestic tractor sales zoomed 69 per cent to 23,503 units last month as compared to 13,871 units in August 2019, it added.

Exports were at 955 units last month, up 1 per cent from 946 units in August 2019.

Hyundai sales dip 6% in August to 52,609 units

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) reported a 6.06 per cent decline in total sales at 52,609 units in August.

The company had sold 56,005 units in the same month last year, HMIL said in a statement.

Domestic sales, however, were up 19.9 per cent to 45, 809 units as against 38,205 units in August 2019, the company added.

The company's exports last month stood at 6,800 units, down 61.79 per cent from 17,800 units in August 2019.

"The company continues humbly to contribute to the recovery of Indian automobile industry by registering domestic sales volume of 45,809 units in August with positive growth of 19.9 per cent on a comparative low base of last year," HMIL Director (Sales, Marketing and Service) Tarun Garg said.

Ashok Leyland August sales down 31% at 6,325 units

Hinduja Group flagship firm Ashok Leyland reported a 31 per cent decline in total vehicle sales at 6,325 units in August.

The company had sold 9,230 units in the same month last year, Ashok Leyland said in a regulatory filing.

Total domestic sales stood at 5,824 units in August as against 8,295 units in the year-ago period, registering a decline of 30 per cent.

Medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) sales in domestic market were down 52 per cent at 2,222 units last month as compared to 4,584 units in the year-ago month, it added.

Light commercial vehicle sales stood at 3,602 units last month as compared to 3,711 units in August 2019, down 3 per cent, the company said.

Hyundai Motor India's August domestic sales up 20%

Automobile major Hyundai Motor India reported a rise of 19.9 per cent in its domestic sales during August, 2020.

Accordingly, the company's total domestic off-take increased to 45,809 units from 38,205 units sold during the corresponding month of last year.

However, the company's exports fell to 6,800 units during the month under review from 17,800 units from August 2019.

Consequently, cumulative sales declined to 52,609 units from 56,005 units sold during the like month of last year.

"HMIL continues humbly to contribute to the recovery of Indian automobile industry by registering domestic sales volume of 45,809 units in August 2020 with positive growth of 19.9 per cent on a comparative low base of last year," Tarun Garg, Director (Sales, Marketing & Service), Hyundai Motor India, said in a statement.

Honda Cars reports 9% dip in August sales at 7,509 units

Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) said its sales declined by 9.43 per cent to 7,509 units in August as compared with same month last year.

The company had reported sales of 8,291 units in August 2019.

“A quarter into the unlock phase, we are progressing as per our plan, both in terms of supply and demand registering a sequential growth of 39 per cent over July this year," HCIL Senior Vice President and Director (Marketing & Sales) Rajesh Goel said in a statement.

As the company ramps up its daily production to 100 per cent of pre-COVID level this month, it is optimistic about the upcoming festive period and expects demand to improve further, he added.

Since the production resumption in June this year, the company has ramped up its monthly domestic despatches from 1,398 units in June to 5,383 units in July to 7,509 units last month, the automaker noted.

HMSI sales in August drops 2% at 4,43,969 units

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) on Wednesday reported 2 per cent decline in its total sales at 4,43,969 units in August.

The company had sold a total of 4,52,551 units in the same month last year.

Domestic sales last month stood at 4,28,231 units as against 4,25,664 units, a growth of 1 per cent, it said adding this was the first time in the ongoing fiscal that its domestic sales breached the 4 lakh units mark.

Exports during the month stood at 15,738 units as against 26,887 units in August last year.

Last month, the company launched its Hornet 2.0 motorcycle price starting Rs 1,26,345 (ex-showroom, Gurgaon).
