Amidst Brexit talks, Tirupur knitwear exporters urge government to seal FTA

Tirupur: With the United Kingdom (UK) is in preparations to leave the European Union, not only the Western World has been pushed into uncertainty, Tiruppur, located more than 8,000 kms away from London in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu, has been gearing for new challenges.

Tiruppur is famous for its knitwear exports to the developed countries, especially to the Europe and the UK. To overcome the issue of declining exports to the EU and UK, the Tiruppur Exporters Association urged the Union Government to seal a Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Speaking to ETV Bharat, the Association President, Raja M Shanmugham said, "There could be some changes once Britain exits EU. A few companies have been requested by the UK buyers to ship the garments prior to the time scheduled”.

It is to be recalled that the trade bodies have appealed to the government to seal the FTA when the Brexit talks were initiated in 2016. The talks for an India-EU bilateral FTA, which is known as Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), were launched in 2007 and were kept on hold due to Brexit.
