Business Desk, ETV Bharat: Among the major states in India, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand have recorded one of the highest growth rates in tax revenues in the past one decade.

According to data released by the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) fifth edition of its statistical publication titled ‘Handbook of Statistics on Indian States 2019-20’, Uttar Pradesh’s tax revenue rose nearly 250% to Rs 1.44 lakh crore in 2019-20 from Rs 41,355 crore in 2010-11.

Notably, RBI has said that all tax revenue figures of 2019-20 are budgeted estimates.

Jharkhand’s tax revenue has also grown by a whopping 298%, or nearly four times, in the last one decade to Rs 23,750 crore in 2019-20 from Rs 5,967 crore in 2010-11.

Importantly, Uttar Pradesh is also the second-highest tax-earning state in the country now after Maharashtra whose tax revenue in 2019-20 stood at Rs 2.1 lakh crore. This is a significant leap from 2010-11 when Uttar Pradesh ranked fourth in terms of tax revenue after Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Maharashtra, meanwhile, has witnessed a 181% jump in tax revenue in the last one decade.

Tamil Nadu, now the third highest tax-earning state, has seen tax revenue jump to Rs 1.25 lakh crore in 2019-20 from Rs 47,782 crore in 2010-11.

Andhra Pradesh tax revenue grew just 67% in the last one decade to Rs 75,438 crore in 2019-20 from Rs 45,140 crore in 2010-11. But that’s because Telangana was carved out from the state in 2014 and hence the tax numbers are not comparable. In 2019-20, Telangana’s tax revenue stood at Rs 69,329 crore, up 137% from Rs 29,288 crore in 2014-15 when it was formed.

Bihar has also shown strong growth, with tax revenue rising 267% to Rs 36,175 crore in 2019-20 from Rs 9,870 crore in 2010-11.

Among the best performers, the north-eastern states have seen the highest percentage growth, albeit at a low base.

For instance, Arunachal Pradesh recorded 570% jump in tax revenue in a decade to Rs 1,440 crore in 2019-20 from Rs 215 crore in 2010-11.

Similarly, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim all reported 250-350% jump in tax revenue in the last one decade.

National capital territory of Delhi also saw its tax revenue rising 158% to Rs 42,500 crore in 2019-20 from Rs 16,478 crore in 2010-11.

Himachal Pradesh also fared poorly with just 117% growth in tax revenue in the last one decade, from Rs 3,642 crore in 2010-11 to Rs 7,921 crore in 2019-20.
