Bihar pips other states to record highest growth in per capita income

In reply to a query raised in Rajya Sabha, minister of state for statistics and programme implementation Rao Inderjit Singh revealed that Bihar’s per capita income rose 9.13% year-on-year in 2019-20, while Uttar Pradesh registered the lowest growth rate at 2.76%.

Business Desk, ETV Bharat: Bihar recorded the highest growth rate in per capita income in 2019-20 compared with other Indian states, according to data shared by the government in the Parliament.

According to government estimates, Bihar’s per capita income rose 9.13% in 2019-20 compared with the year-ago level.

The information was revealed by Rao Inderjit Singh, minister of state for statistics and programme implementation, in reply to a query raised in Rajya Sabha this week.

Besides Bihar, Tamil Nadu’s per capita income also jumped by a healthy 7.63% in 2019-20, while that of Andhra Pradesh rose 7.55%.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh recorded the lowest growth rate in per capita income during the year at 2.76%. Rajasthan’s per capita income grew by a dismal 3.54% in 2019-20, while Chhattisgarh’s growth rate stood at 3.51%.

Among other leading states, Punjab’s per capita income growth rate stood at 4.04% in 2019-20, while it was 5.24% for Delhi, 5.65% for Karnataka and 7.18% for Telangana.

Notably, per capita income estimates for the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra were not available for 2019-20, according to the document shared by the minister.

Singh also revealed that India’s overall per capita income has risen to Rs 94,954 in 2019-20 compared with Rs 62,170 in 2010-11. This translates to a roughly 53% growth over the period of last 10 years.

“Per capita income at constant prices (2011-12) increased during the last 10 years in the country,” Singh pointed in his reply.

Per capita income is a measure of the amount of money earned per person in a country or geographic region. Per capita income can be used to determine the average per-person income for an area and to evaluate the standard of living and quality of life of the population.
