Intro:Hailing Narendra Modi government's invitation to BIMSTEC countries, former ambassador OP Gupta who had served in foreign services for over three decades called it a healthy sign for India. On not inviting Pakistan PM this time unlike 2014, the former diplomat claimed that PM Modi is following the national interest policy.

Body:While talking exclusively to ETV Bharat on this issue, the former diplomat said, 'when Vajpayee went to Pakistan and signed Lahore agreement. In that, it was clearly mentioned that will not allow terror activities to be committed from territories under its control. Since then, Pakistan has been violating the Lahore agreement.'

He further added, 'in 2014, PM Modi did invite Nawaz Sharif hoping that it will begin a new chapter but Pakistan didn't agree to open a new chapter. So, it natural for PM Modi to look east and it is a correct policy.'

Conclusion:Claiming that BIMSTEC upholds a lot of trade potential, the former diplomat said, 'by inviting BIMSTEC nations there is a lot of scope for economic and trade activities.'

Apart from BIMSTEC countries, President of Kyrgyz and Mauritius have also been sent invitations for PM Modi's swearing-in ceremony scheduled to take place on Thursday.
