Thoothukudi: A man allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train after losing Rs 7 lakhs in an online rummy game in Tamil Nadu, a police official said on Saturday.

The deceased, Elvin Patrick, ended his life by jumping in front of a running train in Tirupur on Friday night. Patrick, an employee of the private firm, was addicted to online rummy games and he had reportedly bet a huge sum of money and was debt-ridden.

Police said that Elvin Patrick was addicted to online rummy games and was not able to clear his debts, prompting him to take such a drastic step.

The police recovered Patrick's body near the railway track after a railway official alerted the cops. Tamil Nadu has registered a case and the body has been sent for post-mortem and an investigation is underway.

Tamil Nadu has witnessed frequent deaths by suicide due to online rummy games in the last few months. Though the State government banned the games, the users still access them on different routes on the websites.
