New Delhi: On the occasion of the 77th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on Friday organized various programmes, including a photo exhibition where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also unveiled a new statue of his father.
Rahul Gandhi also visited the photo and rangoli exhibition where he praised the efforts put by the members of the Youth Congress. More than 500 photographs of the former prime minister were being displayed in 10 segments, covering his early life, political career and family pictures.
The other leaders that visited the exhibition are Pawan Bansal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, Shakti Sinh Gohil, KC Venugopal, Deepender Hooda.
Speaking to the media, IYC president Srinivas BV said, "Rajiv Gandhi laid the foundation of Digital India and he was the father of information technology and telecommunication revolution. On his initiative, the Indian telecommunication network was established. He also took the initiative to reduce the minimum age of voting to 18 years in a bid to make the youth more responsible towards the country."
He further said, "Rajiv Gandhi believed that industries cannot develop without the help of science and technology and hence, he introduced a computer revolution in the country. He believed in Panchayati Raj system. He also encouraged youth for sports. Rajiv Gandhi was and will be the hero of the country the architect of modern India."
Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary said Rajiv Gandhi likened to a 'thief' in the alleged Bofors scam. "But recently, when I visited Kargil, the army personnel acknowleged that India would have been in a difficult position if we didn't have Bofors."
