Woman sells off daughter for Rs 10 lakh; grandmother rescues her

A seven-year-old girl, who was sold to a businessman for Rs 10 lakh by her own mother, was rescued by her grandmother. The incident was reported from Salem district in Tamil Nadu.

Salem (Tamil Nadu): A seven-year-old girl, who was sold to a businessman for Rs 10 lakh by her own mother, was rescued by her grandmother. The incident was reported from Seelanaickenpatti in Salem district.

Sathish and his wife Sumathi have three children -- two daughters, aged 10 and seven, and a six-year-old son. Sathish is an alcoholic.

Sumathi was working as domestic help at the house of a wealthy and popular businessman named Krishnan (53) for the last two and a half years. She allegedly sold her second daughter to Krishnan, who has separated from his wife a few years ago, for Rs 10 lakh.

Few days ago, Sumathi's mother Chinna Ponnu called up the police and lodged a complaint against her daughter. Taking cognisance of the complaint, the police reached Krishnan's residence and found that the girl was living with him.

The police rescued the girl and gave her custody to the District Child Protection Unit.

Chinna Ponnu has requested the police that she be given her granddaughter's custody. Police said they had arrested Sumathi and were investigating Krishnan.
