Villagers elect begger for Karnataka gram panchayat polls

Villagers of Bokkahalli village in Karnataka have elected a beggar for the post of President for the local elections. The people said that they are fed up of tall promises of the local and political leaders.

Mysuru: Fed up with the tall and fake promises of political parties and local leaders, the residents of Bokkahalli village have made an unusual choice by choosing a beggar for the post of President in the gram panchayat elections. Bokkahalli village falls under the jurisdiction of Nanjangud Taluk.

Villagers are inspired by movie 'Simha Kannada' in which Vishnuvardhan featured as the hero, prompting them to choose Anakanayaka, who has been begging for years at make his ends meet. The villagers have made Anakanayaka fight in the local elections for the post of the President.

Anakanayaka said he never dreamt of this but the villagers exuded confidence in him.

According to locals, all the previously elected political and local leaders did not do any developmental work.

Anakanayaka wanders on the streets and sleeps at the bus stand and roam around in the village to get meals for himself.

The first phase of the polls will be tomorrow and on the second on December 27th. Karnataka State Election Commission notified that 1,17,383 candidates remained in the fray for the first phase of gram panchayat elections.

The Commission has made it clear that no political party or leader will be allowed to campaign for candidates as these are not party-based elections. No candidate can display pictures or symbols of any political party or leader in their publicity material in violation of the election code of conduct.
