Veteran Congress leader Ram Lal Rahi passes away

Veteran Congress leader and former Minister of State for Home Affairs Ram Lal Rahi passed away today in Sitapur. He had earlier tested positive for the coronavirus and his health condition deteriorated.

Sitapur: Congress leader and former Minister of State for Home Affairs Ram Lal Rahi passed away at his Sitapur residence in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. He was 86.

Rahi was undergoing treatment at a district hospital after he had tested positive for COVID-19. His health condition worsened today in the afternoon and he was shifted to Lucknow. He breathed his last at 5 pm in the evening.

Rahi, who began his political journey at Lok Sabha in 1977, was a four-time MP from Mishrikh. He was also a two-time MLA from Sitapur constituency.

Ram Lal Rahi has served as various ministers in the long political career. Rahi also served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs in the Narasimha Rao government from 1991-1996. Rahi's family members also have a political background.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajay Kumar Lallu expressed grief over his death and offered condolences to his bereaved family members.

Condoling his tragic demise, Priyanka Gandhi said, "Being a minister in the Union Cabinet and party representatives in Uttar Pradesh, Ram Lal Rahi worked relentlessly to strengthen the party and always worked for the welfare of the people. He worked intensively for the development and upliftment of the weaker and the backward section of the society. His political journey is an inspiration and his death is a great loss to the Congress. I offer my deepest condolences to his family."

Ajay Kumar Lallu said," Ram Lal Rahi was a cheerful and a popular politician. He always worked for the welfare of the poor, Dalits and oppressed communities. He worked intensively for the development and upliftment of the weaker and the backward section of the society. It is a loss for us and for the party."
