Vedanta seeks SC permission to operate Tuticorin plant for O2 production

Vedanta has a filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking an extension of time to produce medical oxygen in its Tuticorin plant. However, the Tamil Nadu government has told the apex court that there is no need to extend oxygen production as there is enough Oxygen stock in the state.

New Delhi: Vedanta has a filed a plea in the Supreme Court on Friday seeking an extension of time to produce more medical oxygen in its Tuticorin Sterlite Copper plant. However, the Tamil Nadu government has opposed the move by claiming that there is enough oxygen stock in the state.

By an order dated 27 April 2021, the Supreme Court had allowed Vedanta to run its Sterlite copper plant to produce medical oxygen only till July 31. The order had come in wake of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic which saw a massive shortage of all medical resources including oxygen.

The extension of time was sought on Friday by Vedanta's lawyer, Senior Advocate Harish Salve before the bench of the apex court led by Justice DY Chandrachud. The plea comes days after the state government claimed that no deaths were reported due to lack of oxygen shortage.

Meanwhile, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for Chief Minister MK Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government opposed the plea saying, "We have enough oxygen in the state". The top court said that it will be hearing the matter next week on August 6.
