Kolkata (West Bengal): A day after his surprise induction into the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), MP Babul Supriyo on Sunday expressed his gratitude to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for having given him a chance in the 'playing 11'. "I thank Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a chance to 'play' and the that too in the team of 'first 11'," he said addressing the media.
Supriyo will meet the chief minister on Monday, and leave for New Delhi on Tuesday and meet the Lok Speaker Om Birla. His clear hint was towards his resignation as a Lok Sabha member from Asansol.
After his statement, it is quite clear as to why Trinamool Congress' existing Rajya Sabha member and thespian-turned-politician Arpita Ghosh had abruptly resigned from the Upper House of the Parliament. Speculations are rife that Supriyo may be fielded from the vacant Rajya Sabha seat.

Supriyo, who is a Member of Parliament from the Asansol constituency in West Bengal, had announced his decision to quit politics in July. His decision came after the BJP had faced a crushing defeat in the West Bengal assembly election this year. Supriyo had hinted at differences with the state BJP leadership and losing his ministerial berth as being the prime reasons behind his decision.
"I meant it from my heart when I said I'll leave politics. However, I felt there was a huge opportunity that was entrusted to me (on joining TMC). All my friends said my decision to leave politics was wrong and emotional," the former BJP leader said.
Expressing excitement for a new phase in politics, Supriyo said, "I'm very proud that I am changing my decision. I am coming back for a great opportunity to serve Bengal. I am very excited. I will meet Didi (CM Mamata Banerjee) on Monday. I am overwhelmed by the warm welcome.
In 2021 West Bengal assembly polls, Trinamool Congress' slogan Khela Hobe which roughly translates to 'the game is on' had become immensely popular.
