New Delhi: The Telangana government will present the evidence pertaining to the Disha encounter case to the Supreme Court appointed panel on Saturday. Earlier, a Supreme Court appointed committee led by Justice VS Sirpurkar had asked the Telangana government to submit its evidence in the alleged fake encounter of four rapists in connection with the Disha gang rape and murder case.
The case pertains to the alleged gang rape and killing of Disha (name given by the police) a 26-year-old veterinary doctor in Hyderabad in November 2019. The incident had sparked a massive outrage all across the nation led to the arrests of the four accused men. The men who were then taken by police to recreate the crime scene were allegedly encountered. According to the police, the accused tried to snatch their weapons and attack them in a bid to flee. Subsequently, police encountered by opening fire and killing them.
The encounter by police was praised by many including some eminent politicians, however, many others demanded a probe into the killing as it was being suspected that the police had allegedly killed the accused due to mounting public pressure. The matter was then taken up by the Supreme Court, wherein the apex court appointed Justice Sirpurkar Commission to look into the matter and submit a report.
According to the sources, the committee has concluded collecting records and is now recording evidence, while the pandemic led to the probe being delayed.
