Suneet Sharma appointed Chairman of Railway Board

Former general manager in Eastern Railway Suneet Sharma has been appointed as Chairman and CEO of Indian Railways by the Central government. As ADRM in Mumbai CST, he is credited with increasing the services of the suburban network, which is considered the lifeline of Mumbai.

New Delhi: The appointment committee of Cabinet on Friday appointed Suneet Sharma as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Indian Railway Board (Ministry of Railways). Sumeet Sharma, having forty years of experience in Indian Railways, took charge after the extended one-year tenure of Vinod Kumar Yadav ended on December 31.


Sharma is a graduate in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, who joined Indian Railways in 1979 as a Special Class Apprentice. During his tenure, he worked in operational working, maintenance in sheds, workshops and depots.

During his service as the Chief Rolling Stock Engineer (Freight and Operations), he contributed to put the suburban network back on train within few hours after the 2006 Mumbai train blasts. As Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) in Mumbai, he was credited with increasing the services of the suburban network.

Ministry of Railways tweeted, "Shri Suneet Sharma takes over as Chairman cum CEO, Railway Board. Shri Sharma, IRSME, is an SCRA officer of 1978 batch. Having more than 37 years of experience, he possesses expertise in varied spheres of Railway working. He has undergone trainings in Germany, France,USA etc."

A statement released by the Ministry of Railways said, "As Chief Mechanical Engineer, at Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, he was the team leader for starting electric locomotive production. Conversion of diesel to electric locomotives took place under his leadership in record time for the first time anywhere in the world."During his tenure as General Manager, Modern Coach Factory Raebareli a record of doubling the out-turn of modern passenger coaches in one year was being set. In Eastern Railways, you took initiative in increasing the speed of goods train to a record level and for completing a number of infrastructure projects.

In his career, Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli, and Banaras Locomotive Works has also won the professional awards for best production unit under his leadership.
