Decorating home and office spaces with succulents is very much in trend these days. These small plants with thick leaves are a pleasure to look at. Although they do not require much care, there are a few things that need to be taken care of.
How Should Be The Pot For Succulents?
An Indore-based nursery operator, Pawan Kumar Singh says that using terracotta, ceramic or earthen pots with good drainage is considered ideal for planting succulents. There are a variety of succulents easily available at the nurseries today. Pawan Kumar explains that in general, people generally used to plant a single succulent in a pot, but the trend has changed now. People love to plant a variety of succulents in a big ceramic or terracotta pot. Not just this, you can also prepare a whole garden out of succulents and decorate it with small toys. People also use quirky cups to plant them.
Important Things To Remember
Pawan Kumar explains that for the proper growth of succulents, sunlight exposure and water are necessary. The ideal place to keep a succulent is where they get proper sunlight. A warm and dry environment is considered ideal for its growth.
You also have to be very careful while watering them. Watering them too much or too little can affect their growth. The water requirement may differ from one species to another. Some require water at an interval of 2-4 days, while some need it once in 1-2 weeks. Remember that the plant should be watered again, only if the soil begins to dry.
It is also very important to protect these plants from excess water during rainy days, because the plant may die due to excess water. Water should always be poured into these plants only at the roots. And, to clean the leaves, use a dry cloth instead of water.
Protecting Them Against Insects
Small insects are common in these, but they can ruin the succulents. Therefore, use spray made out of neem or baking soda from time to time, to prevent insects. Apart from this, spraying isopropyl alcohol is also beneficial.
A Few Extra Tips!
- Before planning a succulent, do not forget to add organic fertilizers to the soil in the right proportion.
- Keeping in mind the need for air and sunlight, keep changing the place of the plant as per the requirement.
- Do not keep these plants at the same temperature for longer durations, such as keeping them for long in either sunlight or in shade.
- Clean the leaves regularly with a clean and dry cloth. If it is not followed, a thick layer of dust or soil is likely to get accumulated on the leaves and either the colour of the leaves changes or the plant dies.
