Hyderabad: Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi on Friday took a jibe at the Narendra Modi-led BJP government over the IT raids at actor Sonu Sood's residence and offices in Mumbai.

"If you are a helper of the people, then the government will send IT people to your door and if you are a helper of the BJP government, then it will give you a watchman," Singhvi's tweet, roughly translated from Hindi, said. Here, the Congress leader also indirectly took a dig at the government for providing Y-Plus category security to actor Kangana Ranaut following her spat with Shiv Sena leaders.

On August 27, Sonu Sood was appointed as the brand ambassador of the Delhi government's 'Desh Ke Mentors' programme following a meeting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. However, the actor maintained that nothing political was discussed during the meeting.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders had also condemned the IT action at Sood's premises. "This is nothing but a witch hunt by an insecure government against a giant philanthropist considered a 'messiah' by millions. His only crime is that he worked for the welfare of the downtrodden when they were orphaned by the state," AAP spokesperson Raghav Chadha had tweeted.

Sood was at the forefront in helping the needy during the Covid-19 pandemic. The actor helped thousands of stranded migrant workers return home during the nationwide lockdown.
