New Delhi: While entire Delhi grapples with COVID-19 amid a shortage of oxygen, some samaritans across the capital region have either formed communities or taken it upon themselves to help out those in need of food, medicine, or simply transport.
Shree Sukhmani Society is one of those communities, who has been providing oxygen cylinders, pulse oximeters, masks, and other medical assistance to needy Covid-19 patients, free of cost.
A group of Sikh people formed the ‘Shree Sukhmani Society’, with the common aim of helping out those in need. The team has been offering free oxygen cylinders, oximeters, and thermometers at seven centres across Delhi.
Speaking to ETV Bharat correspondent, Society President, Tejinder Singh said, "Whenever we get a request for an oxygen cylinder, we ask the patients about their oxygen saturation level and if they have consulted any doctor about their requirement of an oxygen cylinder. Seeing the condition and demand, we provide oxygen whenever and wherever we can."

"Our aim was to build a Gurudwara at Bawana area but when the country faced such a crisis like Covid-19, the members of the Society decided that saving humanity was more important. So the money collected for the construction of the gurudwara was spent on distributing sanitisers, spray machines, masks, etc. among the people. By doing so, you might be depriving a needy patient of timely help," said Singh.
"Many people took cylinders but are not returning once they are used. Be it fear of people or selfishness, they are not returning them after taking cylinders from the society and due to this, other people are not getting help today. If people return cylinders, oximeters, and kits after use, then thousands of people can be helped, despite the limited number of items, but this is not happening," said Rajan Gupta, worker of the society.
Apart from spending their own savings to procure cylinders and medical supplies for patients in isolation, the members get financial support from some members of their community in Delhi. With the situation turning alarming now, members of the organisation urged people not to stock up on oxygen cylinders or Covid supplies.
