RK Sinha calls for high-level probe into Bihar hooch tragedy

RK Sinha on Saturday, called for a high-level probe into the allegation against the state police and several MLAs for promoting illegal liquor trade in the state. Following the recent hooch tragedy in Bihar, the opposition parties are attacking the Nitish Kumar government, calling the blanket ban on liquor in the state a "complete failure".

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader RK Sinha on Saturday, called for a high-level probe into the allegation against the state police and several MLAs for promoting illegal liquor trade in the state.

The statement came after the allegations by the family members of recent hooch tragedy victims in Bihar.

Earlier, 14 people had died after consuming spurious liquor in Bihar.

Sinha said that police is pressuring the kin of deceased people give false statements about their deaths. "Some people have alleged that the local police officers are forcibly getting the deceased families to write that their relatives have not died due to drinking spurious liquor. Rather, it is due to a heart attack," said Sinha.

The Nitish Kumar government had banned the sale and consumption of liquor in Bihar in April 2016. However, deaths due to hooch tragedies have seen a rise in different parts of the state over the past few years.
