Delhi/Mumbai: Heavy rains lashed out several parts of the country including the national capital Delhi and Maharashtra. While the rains caused waterlogging in many areas, traffic movements were also halted at various places. Delhi registered 70 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast "light to moderate intensity rain" over Delhi and NCR during the day, while Thane city received 151.33 mm rain between 9.30 p.m on Sunday and 7.30 a.m on Monday. Palghar district also witnessed heavy showers and received 108.67 mm downpour in the same period, authorities said.
Incessant overnight rains drench Delhi; IMD issues advisory
The incessant rains in the national capital caused waterlogging in several parts of the city including ITO and Pul Prahladpur which led to traffic snarls at several stretches in the city and traffic was diverted at the Pul Prahladpur underpass. Traffic snarls were also witnessed on Ring Road near Millennium Park, Sarai Kale Khan, Kilokri, near IP Flyover, Dhaula Kuan, Vikas Marg, Azadpur, among others. Officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) said waterlogging complaints were being dealt with on a priority basis. The weather department issued an advisory suggesting "slippery roads and traffic disruption" due to thunderstorms and rain. It also warned against "partial damage to plantation, horticulture, standing crops, vulnerable structures, kutcha houses and huts" due to rains and strong winds. The IMD also advised to "stay indoors, close windows and doors and avoid travel if possible" and not to take shelter under trees.
Maha: Heavy rains in Mumbai, boy drowns
Heavy rains lashed Maharashtra's Thane and Palghar districts during the night and on Monday morning, causing flooding at several places and claiming the life of a minor boy and severely injuring a 40-year-old watchman was severely injured when a tree fell on him at a residential complex. The four-year-old boy drowned after being swept away in a swollen drain in Thane's Ulhasnagar township on Sunday. There were incidents of wall collapse and flooding in some other low-lying areas also. In Palghar, several places in Vasai and Nallasopara witnessed heavy rains, leading to water-logging in low-lying areas. A four-year-old boy fell in an open drain in Nallasopara and was feared drowned. Efforts were on to trace the minor. In the Vasai area of Palghar, at least 80 cooking gas cylinders were washed away in the floodwaters. Later, the police with the help of firemen shifted the cylinders to a safe place.
Meanwhile, Local train services, which were affected on Central Main Line and Harbour Line due to incessant rainfall, resumed in Mumbai on Monday morning. "Trains on Central Main Line, Harbour Line, and Trans Harbour line are running in Mumbai," informed Central Railway.
Rain prediction at various places
According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) prediction in the wee hours of Monday, a thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain is likely in Delhi and its adjoining places including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan. "Recent satellite imagery shows intense or very intense convection over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana Chandigarh, and Delhi, northwest Madhya Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan, north Konkan and Bihar," IMD informed. "Including sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram & Tripura and neighbouring areas. It leads to the possibility of moderate to intense spell(s) of rainfall along with Thunderstorms and lightning during the next 2-3 hours," IMD added. Meanwhile, rain lashed parts of Haryana including Gurugram.
Rains in Jammu and Kashmir
Parts of Jammu and Kashmir including Srinagar received rainfall on Monday morning after India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted 'generally cloudy sky with moderate rain' for the city today. Rainfall was recorded in parts of Haryana including Gurugram as well.
5 Konkan Rly trains diverted amid flooding of tunnels in Goa
According to Konkan Railway Goa PRO Baban Ghatge, the trains which have been diverted are -- 02618 H. Nizamuddin Ernakulam Express which has been diverted via Panvel, Karjat, Pune Jn, Miraj Jn, Hubballi, Krishnarajapuram, Erode Jn, Shoranur Jn and further proper route.
Heavy rains and ingress of water and slush in tunnels between Karmali and Thivim railway stations in Goa, located along its route has forced Konkan Railway to divert five trains or tranship passengers of four other trains, an official said on Monday.
