Protectors have become predators: Geeta Phogat's charge on Delhi Police

The country's star wrestler Geeta Phogat said in support of the protesters that those who raised the country's honour globally are being subjected to such ill-treatment at the hands of the police who are supposed to be their protecters.

New Delhi: Geeta Phogat, one of the country's top wrestlers who have come out in support of the women wrestlers in an emotionally draining tweet aimed at the Delhi Police said that those who raised the country's honor, are helplessly crying on the streets today because our protectors have become predators.

Geeta also shared a clip of a media interaction in which Sakshi Malik was seen crying on camera and another fellow wrestler consoling her. The Delhi Police allegedly abused the wrestlers and stopped folding beds from being brought into the protest site. The women wrestlers also accused the police of misbehaving with them.

In a viral video, some of the protesters can be heard accusing police personnel of attacking two wrestlers under the influence of alcohol. The accused policeman is seen sitting in the video. The protesters alleged that his colleagues were mute spectators. The scuffle between the grapplers and the police led to head injuries to a couple of protesters.

Vinesh Phogat, another star wrestler broke down before the camera following Wednesday's scuffle saying that they won medals for the country to see such a day. She accused the police of mishandling the women protesters and asked about the absence of women police personnel at the spot.

Meanwhile, security have been beefed up at the capital's Jantar Mantar following the scuffle. The police also detained several leaders including Rajya Sabha MP Dipendra Hooda and chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Swati Maliwal, who had come in to support the wrestlers at night.

The wrestlers resumed their second round of protests on April 23 demanding action into the sexual harassment allegations against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Singh. Seven women wrestlers including a minor had filed their complaint against Singh. The Delhi Police finally filed an FIR against Singh after the matter came up before the Supreme Court.
