New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the implementation of the three controversial farm laws. The apex court has constituted a four-member committee to find a solution to the ongoing stalemate over new farm laws. This committee would interact with farmers and other stakeholders and submit its report to the Supreme Court.
The committee includes farmer leaders and agricultural experts-
1. Bhupinder Singh Mann, president of Bharatiya Kisan Union
2. Ashok Gulati, an agricultural expert
3. Dr Pramod Kumar Joshi, head of International Food Policy Research Institute
4. Anil Ghanwat, president of farmers organisation
Bhupinder Singh Mann
Bhupinder Singh Mann, national president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) is also the chairman of the Kisan Coordinating Committee (KCC). BKU intends to uplift farmers socio-economically.
Recognizing his contributions for the betterment of farmers, he was nominated by the President of India as Rajya Sabha member in 1990. He was one of the founding members of 'Kisan Mitra Sangh', established in 1966, which later became the national level farmers' organization 'Bharatiya Kisan Union.'
Ashok Gulati
Ashok Gulati, an agronomist has been the chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). CACP is the Central Government's advisory board on food supply and pricing policies.
Dr Pramod Kumar Joshi
Dr Pramod Kumar Joshi is entrusted with multiple roles. Currently, he works for the Indian Society of Agricultural Economics and he is a fellow of the India Society of Agricultural Engineering, International Society of Noni Science.
Since 2012, he has been the Director of South Asia, International Food Policy Research Institute, South Asia Regional Office, New Delhi. In addition, he has also been the Chairman of the Governing Board of SAARC Agricultural Center, Dhaka (Bangladesh).
Anil Ghanwat
Anil Ghanwat is the president of farmers organization namely, Shetkari Sanghatana, which advocates for farmers rights. The top farmer body in Maharashtra, Karnataka and other neighbouring states has been hitting headlines for its pro-farmer measures and stance on agricultural issues.
