Puducherry: In order to make polling easier and ensure 100 per cent voting, the Chief Electoral Officer of Puducherry came up with an initiative of postal ballots for those who are elderly or specially-abled.

The Union Territory is gearing up for polls which will be held on April 6.

What are Postal Ballots?

In the system of postal ballots, people over 80-years of age and those with special needs can cast their vote from home.

This initiative was well received by the public. 506 people from Yanam have already applied for the postal ballot that enables voting from home. The Election Commission has printed a special ballot paper for this purpose.

A team of five returning officers, two assistant officers and two police personnel will go to the homes of pre-registered voters. They will carry a ballot box and voting compartment in a special vehicle.

The officials will ask the voter to mark his vote on the ballot paper and the electoral staff will record a video of the process. The voter will sign a declaration form and hand it over to the officials.

However, pre-registered voters who could not use the special ballot for whatever reasons cannot cast their vote on April 6 at the polling booth.

According to the Returning Officer of Yanam, Aman Sharma, 480 people so far have utilized this facility.
