New Delhi: The National Commission for Women has sent a notice to the DGP West Bengal, asking to appear before the commission in person on 31 May with complete action taken reports pertaining to violence against women in West Bengal post-election.
The commission had set up an inquiry committee while taking suo motu cognizance of several incidents of violence against women in West Bengal post-election.
NCW said on Tuesday that the Inquiry Committee had also visited the state and observed that the State government and the police authorities paid no heed to women victims and no effective steps were being taken to ensure the safety and security of women in the state.

The Commission has on multiple occasions observed that the West Bengal Police is non-cooperative towards the Commission in dealing with matters related to atrocities against women in the state”, NCW said in a statement.
The commission added that despite prior information about the visit of the inquiry committee headed by its Chairperson Rekha Sharma, the DGP did not meet the inquiry committee nor desired cooperation was received from the state police authorities.
“Therefore, the National Commission for Women has sent a notice to Director General of Police, West Bengal to appear before the Commission in person on May 31st, 2021 at 12:30 pm with complete action is taken reports on the matters forwarded by the Commission”, it reiterated.

The Commission has also directed to apprise it about the measures taken to ensure the safety and security of women in the state.
Soon after the election results were declared earlier on this month with TMC emerging victorious, many incidents of political violence in and across various parts of West Bengal reportedly killing several people and injuring others, rapes and atrocities against women came to the forefront.
Earlier, a 26-year-old woman from West Bengal was allegedly raped by two men on the way to Delhi and after reaching the farmers protest site at the Tikri border in Haryana. She later succumbed to Covid-19 on April 30 at a private hospital in April.
