Chandigarh: After series meetings within the state unit of the Congress, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa finally made the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab.

Randhawa was born on April 25, 1959, and belongs to the Majhe region of of Punjab. He did his education in Government School, Chandigarh. His father Santokh Singh was also an active member of the Punjab Congress and had good influence in the party.

Randhawa started his political career from Fatehgarh Chudiyan in 2002 by registering a victory against Akali Dal's Nirmal Singh Kahlon. Since 2012, he contested elections from Dera Baba Nanak as he is associated with the Majha region. He was among those MLAs who had resigned from his post when the Supreme Court gave its verdict on the Sutlej-Yumna Link.

He won the Dera Baba Nanak seat in the 2012 assembly elections getting 66,294 votes. His rival Shiromani Akali Dal's MLA Sucha Singh got 63,354 votes.

Randhawa won the 2017 Legislative Assembly poll getting 60,385 votes. He defeated his opponent Sucha Singh Langah who was the Shiromani Akali Dal candidate by a margin of 1,194 votes. Captain Amarinder Singh made him Minister of Jails and Cooperation. Randhawa is considered to be very close to Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu.
