PM Modi exhorts world to fight 'terrorism' used as political tool

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said countries that use regressive thinking and extremism as political tools should be wary of the dangers of terrorism. He also stressed the importance of ensuring peace in Afghanistan in the backdrop of the recent takeover of Kabul by the Taliban. He said the soil of Afghanistan should not be used for promoting terrorism.

United Nations: In his fourth address to the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said countries that use regressive thinking and extremism as political tools should be wary of the dangers of terrorism.

"Countries that use terrorism as a political tool should understand that it is as much as a danger to them," he said.

Modi added that science-based rationale and progressive thinking should be the foundation for the development of all humanity.

Modi stressed the importance of ensuring peace in Afghanistan in the backdrop of the recent takeover of Kabul by the Taliban. He said the soil of Afghanistan should not be used for promoting terrorism.

"(Member nations) have to be very careful that the delicate situation in Afghanistan should not be taken advantage of. This way people of Afghanistan, especially minorities, women and children would be kept out of harm's way...we have a responsibility to them," Modi urged.

'Come, Make Vaccine in India'

During his address, the Prime Minister also invited the global vaccine manufacturers to come to India.

"I ask all vaccine manufacturers to come to India, Make vaccine in India," Modi said.

Modi reiterated that vaccine development and manufacturing have been a key focus of India after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. He said India has developed "the world's first DNA vaccine that can be administered to people older than 12 years," and added that the development of an mRNA vaccine is in the last stage of trials.

Modi also informed the assembly about India's vaccine Maitri program. "We are delivering vaccines to all needful people across the world," he said.

'Mother of Democracy'

At the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Modi on Saturday said India is known as the mother of democracy, adding that "our diversity is the identity of our strong democracy". "I represent the country, which is known as the mother of democracy.

The high-level sessions of the UNGA commenced in New York on Tuesday. Although the UNGA meeting is in a hybrid format, national leaders, heads of the state and diplomats in large numbers have flown into New York to attend the sessions

Modi arrived in Washington on Wednesday. He called on US President Joe Biden on Friday and held first in-person bilateral discussions.

During his first visit to the US after the outbreak of Covid-19, Modi met his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison and Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga. Modi also participated in the first in-person Quad Summit in Washington after COVID-19 on Friday.
