Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent claim of being jailed during an agitation seeking freedom of Bangladesh has sparked a row.

While participating in the National Day Programme on March 26, said that he was jailed during his early years while protesting for freedom of Bangladesh.

"I would like to remind brothers and sisters in Bangladesh with pride, being involved in the struggle for independence of Bangladesh was one of the first movements of my life. I must have been 20-22 years old when I and my colleagues did Satyagraha for Bangladesh's freedom," he said.

"The pictures of atrocities that the Pakistan Army inflicted on the people here used to distract us. For many days those pictures didn't let us sleep," he added.

"PM @narendramodi What his critics mentioned in Dhaka today for participating in the Satyagraha for the creation of Bangladesh and going to jail for it, caused pain in the stomach of his critics. An atmosphere of suspicion began to be raised! These critics would be disappointed to see the back cover of this book published in 1978!", tweeted the BJP spokesperson.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday arrived in Bangladesh on a two-day visit to the nation, his first tour to a foreign country since the COVID-19 outbreak last year. He was received by his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
