Ernakulam: Thaha Fazal, second accused in Pantheeramkavu Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case, appeared before the Special National Investigation Agency Court in Kochi on Tuesday over allegations of links to the Maoists.
The Division Bench of the High Court, on Monday, had cancelled the bail granted to Thaha Fazal by the Special NIA Court and had directed him to surrender immediately. The HC pronounced the verdict on the NIA’s plea seeking to cancel the bail granted to both the accused.
It should also be noted that the High Court did not cancel the bail granted to Alan Shuhaib, citing his age, material seized from him. In addition, Alan had stated that he was undergoing medical treatment.
Thaha’s bail was cancelled after considering Thaha’s alleged role in the case and the material seized from his house. Thaha Fazal reached along with his advocate and surrendered before the Court on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media persons, Thaha said he would move the Supreme Court against the HC verdict cancelling his bail. Thaha said he had not anticipated that the HC would cancel his bail and he did not understand what evidence the HC has found against him. He urged the general public to react against the UAPA act.
While cancelling Thaha’s bail, the HC had also directed the NIA investigation team to complete the trial within a year. The Special NIA Court had granted bail to both the accused Alan and Thaha in September 2020, 10 months after their arrest. However, the NIA had moved the High Court seeking to cancel the bail allowed to both of them by the Special NIA Court.
