Over 100 militants killed in Kashmir so far in 2021: Police

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday having killed three militants in an encounter at Sopore, claimed that 102 militants were neutralised so far in the valley this year.

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday claimed that more than 100 militants have been killed in the valley so far. "Three militants were killed during a gunfight in north Kashmir's Sopore town on Tuesday. So far 102 militants have been killed in Kashmir during 2021," police said in a statement. They also claimed 225 militants were killed last year.

On Monday, two top militants of The Resistance Front (TRF) were killed in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, and three more militants were killed in Peth Seer area of ​​Sopore on Tuesday. On the other hand, ten militants were killed by security forces in the past four days.

Giving details about the Sopore gunfight, police said, "Security forces launched a joint search operation on intervening night of August 23 and 24 on a tip-off from a reliable source. The militants were asked to surrender, but they refused. And, opened fire on the security forces, which was retaliated thus triggering gunfight."

The statement further said that the operation was stopped during the night due to darkness, but the cordon in the area was increased. The slain militants have been identified as Faisal Fayaz and Rameez Ahmed of Shopian and Ghulam Mustafa Sheikh of Kupwara. All three were affiliated with the militant group TRF.

An AK-47 rifle and two pistols were also recovered from the three slain militants, according to police records.
