Motivated comments on India's internal issues not welcome: MEA on Hijab row

New Delhi: New Delhi: A day after the United States Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, Rashad Hussian said that the “hijab bans in schools violate religious freedom and stigmatize and marginalise women and girls”, India on Saturday issued a statement that "motivated comments” on India's internal issues are not welcome.

The MEA in an official response to some media queries on the Hijab row stressed that the matter regarding dress code is under judicial examination by the Honourable High Court of Karnataka adding the issues are resolved through its constitutional framework and mechanism.

"Our constitutional framework and mechanisms, as well as our democratic ethos and polity, are the context in which issues are considered and resolved. Those who know India well would have a proper appreciation of these realities. Motivated comments on our internal issues are not welcome" the statement read.

Similarly, two days back India's Charge d'Affaires Suresh Kumar to Pakistan refuted all allegations leveled by the Pakistan Foreign Office over the Karnataka hijab controversy. The statement from New Delhi also highlighted that India is a secular country and that Pakistan should at first look at their own track record.
