Maximum number of murders took place in Delhi in 2021: NCRB

As per the report, a total of 1,955 cases of murder were registered in 2021, showing an increase of 5.7 percent over 2020 (1,849 cases). The crime rate registered also shows an increase from 1.6 percent in 2020 to 1.7 in 2021.

New Delhi: India has registered an increase of over 5.7 percent in murder cases in the last year with Delhi city registering the highest number of murder cases in 2021, said the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

As per the report, a total of 1,955 cases of murder were registered in 2021, showing an increase of 5.7 percent over 2020 (1,849 cases). The crime rate registered also shows an increase from 1.6 percent in 2020 to 1.7 in 2021.

“‘Disputes’ (849 cases) was the motive of murder in the highest number of cases followed by ‘Personal Vendetta or Enmity’ (380 cases) and ‘Love Affairs’, said the NCRB report.

Amongst a list of 19 cities with more than 2 million population, the NCRB data said that Delhi City, Mumbai (Maharashtra), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Surat (Gujarat), Jaipur (Rajasthan) are the top six cities with more than 2 million population registering the maximum number of murder cases.

Although Delhi city registered a little less number of murder cases in 2021 (454) in comparison to 2020 (461), other cities registered a marginal increase in murder cases. Mumbai registered 162 murder cases in 2021 in comparison to 148 in 2020 followed by Chennai 150 (in 2020) and 161 (in 2021), Surat 121 (in 2021) and 116 (in 2020).

Illicit Relationships and dacoity are the two more reasons for such an increasing trend of murder cases, the NCRB data said. Meanwhile, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu are the top three states with the maximum number of cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act registered during the year 2021.

A total of 3,745 cases have been registered in 2021 by the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACBs) as compared to 3,123 cases in 2020, showing an increase of 19.9 percent. Out of 3,745 cases, the majority 67.6 percent were ‘Trap Cases’ (2,532) followed by 13.6 percent of Criminal Misconduct (511 cases).

Maharashtra topped the list of states with 773 corruption-related cases followed by Rajasthan (501) and Tamil Nadu (423). Significantly, 12 cases have also been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act in Delhi in 2021.
