New Delhi: Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been elected as the chairperson of TMC's parliamentary party by her party MPs from both the houses. The announcement was made on Friday by MPs Sukhendu Shekhar Ray and Derek O'Brien in New Delhi. Buzz about her larger aspirations has already been making rounds and after her name was announced as the leader of TMC parliamentary party.

Trinamool Congress Party's leader in Rajya Sabha Derek O'Brien said that the resolution was passed in the the meeting of TMC's parliamentary party on Thursday and unanimously adopted and signed by all the MPs.

"She has been a seven time MP and now she is the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the third consecutive term. Clearly, she is the most experienced leader to be the chairman of AITC's parliamentary party" said Derek O'Brien.

Mamata is scheduled to visit Delhi on 26 July and she will be meeting PM Modi and the President of India. Mamata has already expressed her desire to hold a meeting with the leaders of opposition parties and hold a discussion on several issues like Pegasus spyware, Farm laws and price hikes. A meeting of opposition leaders at NCP Chief Sharad Pawar's residence in Delhi is likely to take place in an effort to show a united opposition on the said issues.

While announcing Didi's name as the leader of parliamentary party, TMC MP Derek O'Brian also said that "electing Mamata as Parliamentary Party leader was to formalise the things". He also said that it was on two levels, one is at conceptual level and the second at strategic and tactical level.

Her name as one of the leader who can take on Modi has been floating since 2019 general elections but despite efforts, TMC could not unite the opposition parties. But this time it is being said that opposition parties, especially Trinamool is preparing to make an all out attempt to oust NDA in 2024 and for that Didi's face will be projected by Trinamool. Sources said that six political parties with presence in parliament have already extended their support for Mamata Banerjee's name to be in the forefront of a united opposition. Series of meetings in the coming week when Mamata Banerjee will be in the national capital, might make the picture more clear.
