Hyderabad: Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wants Akhil Gogoi to join the party. The prominent RTI activist and Raijor Dal MLA from Sibsagar informed the media recently about this development. Akhil Gogoi said that Mamata Banerjee has offered him the position of Trinamool Congress president in Assam.

"Mamata Banerjee invited me to Kolkata several times. I have gone to Kolkata twice and met her as well. She has offered me to start the Assam unit of the Trinamool Congress and lead the party in Assam. I have nothing to hide. This issue was also discussed in our party (Raijor Dal) but the party is yet to take any decision on this issue," Akhil Gogoi said to the media.

The development assumes significance as Gogoi had always been favouring the unification of all the regional parties in the country to defeat the BJP."We are a regional democratic party with regional sentiments and commitment for the people of the state. As a regional party, we always believe in having coordination with regional political parties in other areas. As the regional parties across the country united after the emergency of 1975, people must understand that now is the time for the unification of regional parties due to the undeclared emergency by the RSS and BJP," he said.

"All the regional political parties are going to unite soon. We are also in touch with other regional political parties in other states so that Raijor Dal also remains with the federation of the regional political parties," Gogoi said.

Akhil Gogoi was arrested by the Assam police in December 2019. All charges against him were dropped last month after a detention of 18 months. Gogoi had contested the Assam legislative assembly election in April this year and won from the Sibsagar constituency.
