During a discussion on Covid management in Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not fulfilling the promises he made to people, rather he made the health minister a scapegoat.

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge during a discussion on Covid management slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating he did not fulfil promises he made to people, rather he made the health minister a scapegoat.

PM Modi appealed to people to clang utensils, light up candles. People trusted him and did all of it. He didn't fulfill his promise but disappointed them, said Kharge.

Government asked people to wear masks and maintain social distancing. But what were they doing, during the elections in different states? You are breaking your own rules. They should be given credit for flouting COVID norms, added Kharge.

The veteran Congress leader went on to add: Lockdown was announced overnight, just like demonetisation. The government did not prepare for it. There were no trains for people to go back home. The livelihood of people was impacted. Government should be held accountable.

He also showed photos of bodies floating in Ganga river, migrant workers return back home before the House. Kharge pointedly said the government claimed 5.5 lakh persons have succumbed to Covid but it is under-reporting. He also slammed the government for the shortage of beds, oxygen. Stating 5.3 per cent of the population has only received two doses, he also asked what is the current status of vaccination.

Following a stormy session of Parliament on July 19 over the Pegasus snooping row, the Opposition's furore in both Houses continued on Tuesday too. Rajya Sabha was adjourned thrice. The session would conclude on August 13. A total of 31 bills are proposed to be introduced in Parliament.
