Kerala police officer faces action for misconduct

Grade ASI Gopakumar faced disciplinary action for allegedly misbehaving and abusing a complainant in the presence of his daughter. The report filed by the state police head stated the misconduct by the cop tarnished the image of the Kerala police.

Thiruvananthapuram: Grade Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Neyyar dam police station has been transferred for allegedly misbehaving with a complainant and his daughter. As per the inquiry report filed by DIG K Sanjay Kumar, ASI Gopakumar had verbally abused and shouted at a complainant and his daughter.

The complainant approached the police station with his younger daughter to file a complaint after his elder daughter wenr missing.

The report stated that Gopakumar's misconduct has brought dishonour and disgrace to the Kerala Police. The inquiry report on the misconduct of the ASI was submitted to the state Police Head Loknath Behra.

However, Grade ASI Gopakumar said that he resorted to misconduct as the complainant had provoked him.

As per the inquiry report submitted by K Sanjay Kumar, ASI Gopakumar had misbehaved with the father-daughter duo when they had visited the police station regarding a police complaint. The controversy erupted after the visuals of verbal abuse and misconduct which the complainant had shot on his mobile phone made rounds on social media.

According to the report, the complainant had reached the Police Station to file a missing complaint about his daughter. Instead of understanding the plight of the complainant whose daughter was found missing, the ASI shouted and abused the complainant using bad words in the presence of his daughter. His action was a ‘grave misconduct and was highly intolerable’.

The report added, "Being a cop, he must have approached the problem in a more composed and sensitive manner.

ASI Gopakumar was speaking to the complainants in plain clothes while on duty, the report accused. The ASI committed ‘grave misconduct, unbecoming of a police officer, and abuse of authority.’ Being a disciplined force, the police must behave in a respectful manner, especially to senior citizens and women. Such disgraceful and imprudent acts by the policemen should be nipped in the bud, the DIG said in his report to the DGP.

The DGP had ordered for an inquiry in the incident after the visuals of the ASI’s alleged misbehavior recorded by the complainant himself at the station had gone viral and caused public outrage.
