Thiruvananthapuram: A sub-inspector of police (SI) has been suspended from the services after he was accused of stealing a mobile phone belonging to a train accident victim. Jyothi Kumar, who was serving as an SI at the Mangalapuram police station at the time of the incident, put his official SIM in the stolen phone and used it as his official phone. Jyothi Kumar is now serving as an SI at the Chathanoor police station.
Police said Jyothi Kumar stole the phone of Arun Kumar, a native of Valiyathura who was run over by a train near Kaniyapuram railway station on June 18. Jyothi Kumar was then posted at Mangalapuram as part of election transfers. The police official, who went to the accident spot, stole Arun's mobile from the accident spot.
Relatives of Arun Kumar had raised doubts over his death and had given a complaint to the Managalapuram police saying that Arun's mobile phone was missing.
The cybercrime wing then conducted an investigation with the IMEI number of the mobile phone and found out that Jyothi Kumar, who was by then transferred to Chathanoor has been using this mobile phone as his official phone.
Police found out that Jyothi Kumar stole the mobile phone from the pocket of Arun Kumar during the Inquest. Based on a report from the investigation team, DIG was ordered to suspend the SI.
