Kashmir Press Club condemns police lathicharge on media covering Muharram Procession

The Kashmir Press Club (KPC) on Tuesday condemned the police lathicharge by J&K police, on media persons who were covering a Muharram procession in Srinagar.

Srinagar (J&K): The Kashmir Press Club (KPC) on Tuesday condemned the police lathicharge by the Jammu and Kashmir Police on media persons who covering a Muharram procession in Srinagar. KPC demanded that the police authorities take action against the policemen involved in the incident and sensitize their rank and file, such that they respect media freedom.

Scores of media persons were allegedly thrashed by the policemen when they were performing their professional duties at Jahangir Chowk in Srinagar. The media persons, including photojournalists, were covering Muharram procession at Jahangir Chowk, when the sleuths from Shergari Police Station beat them to pulp "without any provocations".

Observing that the media persons were performing their professional duty, the club in its statement termed the police action as uncalled for and unfortunate. The club also reiterated that police authorities need to respect the freedom of the press as enshrined under the Constitution and ensure strict disciplinary action against the guilty policemen involved in the incident.
