Karwar (Karnataka): Villagers of Muchhalli in Uttara Kannada's Karwar district carried an elderly ailing woman on their shoulders for over 5 km to a hospital so she could get timely treatment. It took them at least an hour to ferry her to a town from where she was taken to the hospital in a car. The woman is now recovering, her family members said.

Dattaranya area of Amadalli village panchayat, where Mucchalli is located, lacks basic road connectivity, compelling the villagers to walk long distances. The locals said their multiple grievances and requests to the administration and local political representatives to sanction basic amenities have gone unanswered.

On Saturday, Nemigowda, a resident of Machhalli village, complained of uneasiness. As her condition worsened, the villagers quickly gathered at her house, placed her on a plastic chair and tied it to a piece of a tree trunk. They then carried her on their shoulders to the town, where they arranged a car. "Anyone who is unwell and unable to walk through this 5 km stretch, we invariably have to extend help as there is no other option. In the event of an emergency, a tragedy is very much a possibility. Though we have raised this issue with the authorities concerned, nothing has been done so far," a villager said.
