Centre all set to sign a tripartite 'Karbi Peace Accord'

The much-hyped Karbi Peace Accord signing programme has commenced at the Union Home Ministry in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Additional Secretary (NE) in the MHA Piyush Goyal are present in the programme. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief secretary Jishnu Barua, Union Minister for Ports and Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal also joined in.

New Delhi: The much-hyped Karbi Peace Accord signing programme has commenced at the Union Home Ministry in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Additional Secretary (NE) in the MHA Piyush Goyal are present in the programme. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, chief secretary Jishnu Barua, Union Minister for Ports and Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal also joined in.

A 10-member delegation from five different militant outfits from central Assam including People's Democratic Council of Karbi Anglong (PDCK), Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), Karbi People's Liberation Tiger (KPLT), Kuki Liberation Front (KLF) and United Peoples Liberation Army (UPLA) are present in the signing event.

The accord intends to give more autonomy and financial power to the already existing Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). The militant outfits were earlier fighting for a separate Karbi State. As many as 152 members from these different outfits have already been campaigning in New Delhi for the last few days for the accord. The pact among others will have the provision of setting up Sainik school, veterinary and agriculture university, central university as well as the airport in Karbi Anglong among others.
