New Delhi: After months of speculations, CPI leader and former JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar and Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM) MLA Jignesh Mevani will be joining the Congress party on September 28, on the occasion of Bhagat Singh Jayanti.
The move to induct Kumar and Mevani underscores the Congress' attempt to include young and dynamic leaders in the party ahead of the 2022 Assembly Elections in the states. The induction of these leaders will be done in Delhi. It is also being learnt that Kanhaiya may bring few more leaders with him while joining Congress.
Mevani, who is a Dalit leader, may get a key role in Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee. Congress had adopted the same strategy in Punjab as well where a Dalit leader Charanjeet Singh Channi is recently being appointed as the Chief Minister just months ahead of the Assembly polls. The move was been taken to woo Dalit votes in the state. Mevani's induction in the party may also help Congress to get support from the Dalit community in Gujarat.
Recently, Mevani had also congratulated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the move taken in Punjab. "The decision of appointing Charanjit Singh ji as the CM of Punjab is a message that Rahul Gandhi and Congress have given. It will have a tremendous impact amongst not just Dalits but all the subaltern masses. For the Dalits, the move is not just brilliant but soothing too," Mevani tweeted.
