J&K Gupkar alliance convenes meeting on August 24

J&K: The J&K Gupkar alliance will hold a meeting on August 24 at the residence of National Conference President Farooq Abdullah. The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) spokesperson Yousuf Tarigami speaking to media said that all the members have been informed to attend the meeting which has been convened to reportedly discuss on various issues pertaining to the state.

The Gupkar alliance includes the National Conference (NC), Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM), Jammu and Kashmir Awami National Conference (JKANC) and the People's Movement, while Sajjad Lone of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference (JKPC) has split from the alliance.

The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) was formed on August 4, 2019 to defend Article 370, but following its repeal on August 5, its participants were imprisoned. Following the release, the alliance had convened on August 20, 2020, and issued a Gupkar Declaration for the restoration of Article 370. However, on January 19, 2021, Sajjad Lone's People's Conference fell apart.

It may be recalled that on August 5, 2019, the BJP led government had repealed Article 370 in Parliament and divided the state into two Union Territories. The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) is an electoral alliance between five regional political parties in Jammu and Kashmir and has been working for the restoration of Article 370, along with Article 35A since last year.
